Motezza Guide - Practical information for renting
Motorcycle Rentals in Italy: What Documents Do You Really Need?
Gerhard · Motezza · Greve in Chianti · 6 min read
Exploring Italy on two wheels is like an espresso for the soul. But before you start the engine, make sure your paperwork is in order. Here’s the Motezza checklist for your driver’s license, ID, International Driving Permit (IDP), translation, and deposit—everything you need to know before picking up your bike.
This is practical information provided to the best of our knowledge; it is not legal advice. Requirements may vary depending on your country of origin and the type of driver's license you hold. If you're unsure, just get in touch with Gerhard.
You almost always need these four things
Renting a motorcycle in Italy isn't about complicated red tape. It's about making sure you have all the necessary documents with you—the originals. That way, picking up the bike is stress-free, and you'll be rounding that first corner in no time.
- Valid motorcycle license The license class must match the motorcycle. For the Motezza: A2 or A for the Royal Enfield Classic 350.
- Identity card or passport Please bring the original with you; a photo on your cell phone does not substitute for the document.
- Credit card for the deposit At Motezza, the amount is €800, either held as a credit card hold or paid in cash. Prepaid and debit cards are accepted only for the rental fee, not for the security deposit. The funds are released after the vehicle is returned in good condition.
- Booking confirmation Digital is usually sufficient. The main thing is that the date, name and booking are clearly recognizable.
EU driving license or non-EU driving license
The decisive factor is not which country you come from, but whether your driver's license is clearly recognized and legible in Italy without further translation.
What is an IDP?
An International Driving Permit is a standardized international translation of your driving license. It makes it easier for authorities and rental companies to see which vehicle classes you are allowed to drive.
- The IDP is valid only in conjunction with a national driver's license; it is not sufficient on its own
- There are different versions (the 1949 and 1968 conventions); which one you receive depends on your country.
- The IDP covers only Category A, not A2; therefore, anyone from a non-EU country should have Category A on their national driver's license
- Check to see if your motorcycle license is shown correctly—it’s better to clarify this beforehand than to argue about it at the counter.
- You apply for an IDP in your home country, usually at the automobile club or a driving license authority
Alternative: certified translation
If no IDP is available, a certified or sworn translation of the driver's license may be an alternative. This is sometimes more time-consuming in terms of organization, especially if the trip is imminent.
If you come from a non-EU country, clarify IDP or translation before departure if possible. Then your vacation won't start with a lot of formalities at a counter.
The 3-minute checklist for your bag
Paperwork is like a rain suit: You hope you won't have to pay much attention to it, but when it really counts, you're very glad you have everything you need.
Gerhard - Motezza - Greve in ChiantiAnswered briefly
Do I have to have the documents with me when driving?
Yes, you must always carry your driver's license and ID with you. If an IDP or a certified translation is relevant for you, this also belongs in your jacket pocket or in your luggage.
Is a non-EU driver's license in English sufficient?
Not always. Depending on the country of origin, Italy may also require an IDP or a certified translation. If in doubt, clarify this before traveling.
Which driving license category do I need for Motezza?
To ride the Royal Enfield Classic 350, you'll need a Class A2 or A motorcycle license. If you're not sure about your national license class, just get in touch with Gerhard.
How much is the security deposit at Motezza?
