Renting a motorcycle in Italy: What documents do I really need?

Italy on two wheels is espresso for the heart - but with the right paperwork in your tank bag, please. Here is my compact Motezza checklist: EU vs. non-EU, IDP/translation, credit card & the typical stumbling blocks.

Rent a motorcycle in Italy (Tuscany): What documents do you need for the rental?
Royal Enfield in Tuscany - with the right paperwork in your tank bag, you can get off to a relaxed start: Driver's license, ID and (if necessary) IDP/translation.
Note: I share practical information here to the best of my knowledge and with references to official sources. This is No legal advice. Requirements may vary depending on country of origin, document type and landlord. If you are unsure, write to me briefly via the Contact page.

The short version: You almost always need these 4 things

  • Valid motorcycle license Suitable class for the motorcycle (A/A2/A1 - depending on the bike).
  • ID card (original) Identity card or passport - not just a photo, please.
  • Credit card in the driver's name Often necessary for deposit/deposit (depending on landlord). You can also find details in my FAQ.
  • Booking confirmation / Voucher If booked online: Printout or cell phone is usually sufficient. To be on the safe side: Booking.

EU/EEA driver's license vs. non-EU: The decisive difference

If you have an EU/EEA driver's license

In practice, it is usually straightforward: EU/EEA driving licenses are usually recognized in Italy. For the rental, however ID card and often credit card Standard.

If you rent from me and are unsure: A quick ping via Contact is sufficient.

If you have a non-EU/non-EEA driver's license

Then in many cases you will also need either a International Driving Permit (IDP) or one Certified/sworn translation. An IDP is normally only valid together with your national driver's license (i.e: both take with you).

My tip: If you are traveling soon anyway, IDP is often the less stressful way.

What is an IDP - and which one do I need?

IDP = standardized translation

Simply put, an IDP is an internationally standardized translation of your driver's license - not a replacement.

Two variants

There are usually two convention variants (1949 and 1968). Which one you get depends on your country and the issuing authority.

Practice check

Make sure that your Motorcycle authorization (class) is shown correctly - it is better to clarify this beforehand rather than discuss it later.

Alternative to IDP: Notarized translation

If you do not receive an IDP, a Certified/sworn translation of your driver's license could be an alternative. This is sometimes more time-consuming in terms of organization - especially shortly before departure.

If you are unsure what makes the most sense for your case: write to me via Contact, and I'll help you to go in the right direction (without official German).
